Brawl breaks out between Kazakh, Chinese workers in Atyrau

Domestic disturbance breaks out on grounds of Chinese company dormitory between Kazakh and Chinese workers

Tuesday, August 14, 2012 - Workers for the Chinese energy and chemical firm Sinopec were embroiled in a brawl in coastal Kazakh city Atyrau, local media reported Tuesday.

The brawl involved at least 30 workers at dormitories for the company’s workers in the coastal Caspian city in Western Kazakhstan.

Four people involved in the altercation needed to receive medical attention at a local hospital, the state-run Kazinform news agency reported.

“The conflict was localized,” local police spokesperson Gulnazir Mukhtarov told the news agency.

“Four people were sent to the regional hospital with injuries. After providing the necessary assistance, they all went home. [The incident] is currently under investigation, during which investigators will identify the instigators of the fight.”

Though Kazakhstan and China have grown closer on the governmental level, unease is bubbling at lower levels as Kazakh citizens fear being overrun by their behemoth neighbor to the east.
