Woman killed by flood in southern Kyrgyzstan

MES
Flood waters in Batken swept one 42-year-old woman away

Monday, May 14, 2012 - Flash floods in southern Kyrgyzstan resulted in at least one death while hundreds of homes sustained flooding damage, the country’s ministry of emergency situations said on Monday.

“In the Batken region, as a result of floods coming down, a woman died,” the ministry said in a statement.

The 42-year-old woman’s body was found about nine miles outside of Batken by relatives.

In Jalalabad province’s Bazar-Korgon district, ministry officials estimate that 374 homes were inundated as a result of the flooding, caused by heavy rains over the weekend.

“In the seven villages of the rural district, torrents flooded 374 homes,” the ministry said in a statement.

“Of these, MES [ministry of environmental services] have judged 16 homes to be unfit, three need major repairs, and 115 are under control,” the statement said.

The southern province of Osh also sustained flood damage.
