Turkmen-Uzbek neighbors talk trade, investment

Ashgabat hosts Turkmen-Uzbek business forum

Friday, April 13, 2012 - Turkmen political and business leaders sat down Friday to ratchet up trade and investment with a visiting delegation from next-door neighbor Uzbekistan.

The two sides came together in the Turkmen capital Ashgabat within the Turkmen-Uzbek business forum.

Participants pinpointed energy, transportation, and communication as the most promising sectors, the semi-official news agency Turkmenistan.ru reported.

They agreed there was great potential to boost bilateral trade and expand the range of business projects.

The senior-level Uzbek delegation represented government agencies and enterprises, and included the heads of leading corporations focused on energy, engineering, light industry, agriculture, commerce, pharmaceuticals, and food.

The team was led by Uzbek Minister of Foreign Economic Relations, Investments and Trade Elyor Ganiev.

Their Turkmen hosts represented key ministries, departments, and state agencies, as well as the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs and the Chamber of Commerce.

Elsewhere in the capital on the same day, Uzbeks and Turkmen delegates participated in a seventh round of wide-ranging talks that embraced the spheres of science and culture, along with trade and economy.

That event was held under the auspices of the Joint Turkmen-Uzbek Commission for Trade and Economic, Scientific-technical and Cultural Cooperation.
