Uzbekistan will not host the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in 2012 as scheduled, the international soccer body said on Sunday.
The tournament will not be held there for “due to a number of logistical and technical issues,” the FIFA web site stated. The FIFA executive committee made the decision in meetings on Friday and Saturday.
Uzbekistan was originally awarded hosting duties in March 2011.
Members of the Football Association of Uzbekistan (UFF) told Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty on Monday that they have not formally heard from FIFA.
“Yes, everybody is talking about this news, but we haven’t been officially informed yet,” an official requesting anonymity told the news agency.
“We are waiting for an official letter [on Tuesday] and we’re expecting more details about these ‘technical issues’ as well.”
Japan may instead host the summer championships, scheduled to be held from August 18 to September 9. The East Asian country is said to be FIFA’s first choice for the event.
To compensate Uzbekistan, FIFA has promised the UFF that the country will host another FIFA event in the future.
