Japan grants Uzbekistan $2.5M to develop human resources

Funds will help Uzbek citizens studying in Tokyo

Tuesday, May 08, 2012 - Japan, one of the world’s leading aid donors, has pledged to provide $2.5 million in grants to assist the development of human resources in Uzbekistan, the Tokyo government said on Monday.

The money will be disbursed over a three-year period beginning this April, the Japanese foreign ministry said in the announcement.

Most of the grant aid will be used to pay the costs of young Uzbek state representatives taking up studies in Japan, it said.

The news follows talks between senior government officials in the Uzbek capital of Tashkent last week, the Tokyo-based Kyodo news agency reported on Tuesday.

Following their meeting, Uzbek Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Nigmatovich Aripov and visiting Japanese Senior Vice Foreign Minister Ryuji Yamane signed the aid agreement last Thursday.
