Malaysia, Turkmenistan look to increase bilateral ties

Malaysian firm Petronas is one of the few foreign firms helping Turkmenistan drill hydrocarbon reserves

Friday, July 27, 2012 - The Malaysian and Turkmen governments decided this week to create a Joint Commission Meeting to further economic ties between the states.

Malaysian Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman met with his Turkmen counterpart Rashid Meredov as part of a two-day visit ending Thursday to the Turkmen capital Ashgabat, during which the two sides discussed future cooperation in the construction and transportation industries, as well as the tourism sector.

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov “expressed great pleasure over the current state of bilateral relations and regarded Malaysia as a strategic partner of Turkmenistan, particularly in relation to the involvement of Petronas in his country’s oil and gas exploration activities,” the Turkmen foreign ministry said in a statement.

Petronas is a major foreign investor in Turkmenistan’s oil and gas sector.
