The Turkmen government has launched an international tender to rebuild the damaged city of Abadan, Turkmenistan.ru reported on Wednesday.
The town – originally located miles outside the Turkmen capital Ashgabat – will be rebuilt in the Rukhabat district, near the capital.
The tender is calling for a foreign firm to undertake the rebuilding of the town, heavily damaged in an armory explosion in July 2011. The autocratic Turkmen government refused to acknowledge the incident until days after the event when images showing the city ablaze were released on the internet.
The government aims to build a new, modern city, aided by the construction of buildings, homes, and schools. Utilities, water, and sewer facilities are also included in the tender, part of the government’s City Development Plan 2030.
Interested firms must submit their applications to the construction ministry by June 6.
Abadan is a city of 50,000 residents.
