Malaysian firm to build power station in northern Tajikistan

Malaysian company will construct power plants in Tajikistan's north

Thursday, May 10, 2012 - The Tajik government on Tuesday signed a preliminary deal with a Malaysian company for construction of a coal-fired power station in the country’s far north, not far from the Kyrgyz border.

HOS International Trading (PTY) of Malaysia will also build several small- and medium-sized hydropower plants in the mainly mountainous country.

Tajik Minister of Energy and Industry Sherali Gul signed the Memorandum of Understanding in the capital Dushanbe with the visiting Malaysian business leaders, the Asia-Plus news agency reported.

The 300 Megawatt coal-fired thermal power station will supply the Shurab village of Isfara district in northern Tajikistan.

The Dushanbe government opted for a coal-fired power plant for Shurab village, as it does not have access to reliable water sources.

The power station will be built on the shores of the nearby Kayrakkum reservoir and supplied with two tons of coal daily, mined both locally and purchased from the Sulukta coal prospect in Kyrgyzstan just across the border, according to the CA-News.org news agency.
