Tajikistan to restore electricity deliveries to Afghanistan

Tajikistan is supposed to restore electricity deliveries to Afghanistan Tuesday

Tuesday, May 01, 2012 - Tajikistan is expected to resume electricity delivery to Afghanistan on Tuesday, Tajikistan’s state-run power company said.

Electricity delivery to Tajikistan’s southern neighbor stopped abruptly last week, when an emergency situation forced power transmission to be suspended, the Tajik-based Avesta.tj news agency reported.

Bad weather contributed in part to the situation, a source at Barqi Tojik, the state electricity company, told the news agency.

“The fact [was] that a supporting high-voltage line was on the hilly terrain, but due to landslides, mudflows began, which approached the foundation baseline,” the source said.

“Given the situation, the experts decided to move the anchor line to a safe distance from the place of possible landslide or flat terrain to avoid accidents.”

The line carries 230 megaWatts of electricity from one country to the other.
